Needs Assessment

Project Title Using Internet Search Engines
Project Description
  • This project will teach fifth graders how to use search engines to locate information on the Internet.
  • Learner need to know what search engines are, what they do, and how to use them.
  • The fifth grader learners will be able to use Internet Search Engines effectively to locate information to complete their research projects.
Detailed Description of Needs Assessment (development of instruments and their use)
  • Teacher observation was the first indication that learners at the fifth grade level did not know how or what Internet Search Engines are. An individual student survey form was used to support teacher observations.
  • The learning environment is a K-5 elementary school where the technology teacher instructs the students on various technology skills, once a week for 40 minutes.
  • A web page was used to collected survey responses. Actual data is posted as an attachment below. All personal learner data has been removed.
Summary Needs Assessment The data clearly shows there is a need for the learners to know how to use an Internet Search Engine to locate information on the world wide web. From the current data collected, 70% of the learners have access to the Internet at home, with 100% access at school and in their classroom. This is a clear indication that the Internet can be used to do research for school projects. In addition, it is clear that majority of learners do not know what Internet search engines are or what they do.
I learned that my learners would provide honest answers when asked. The learners made it clear that they want to know about Internet search engines and how to use them, by categorize themselves honestly.
Goal Statement The learners will gain a knowledgeable understanding of Internet search engines, and use them effectively to locate research information.
